Continuing growth in Billund

187,883 passengers passed through BillundAirport in April 2008. It is an increase of 13.5 per cent compared to April last year. There are variations within the segments.

Scheduled international flights show significant growth as the number of passengers on these flights went up by 39.9 per cent to 127.837. Traffic to London and Oslo has increased. To london because this route is now being operated by both Sterling Airlines and Ryanair. To Oslo because this route is being operated by Cimber Air, SUN-AIR/BA and Sterling Airlines.

Lufthansa took over the route between Billund and Frankfurt on March 30 with at considerable effect. The number of passengers on this route has gone up by more than 50 per cent. At the same time the biggest international route from Billund – KLM’s route to Amsterdam – has continued its growth with double-digit growth rates.

Also Cimber Air’s expansions to Munich, Bergen and Stavanger have contributed to the growth. The same goes for Sterling Airline’s new route to Prague.

Also Ryanair’s many routes have contributed significantly to the growth.

Today, May 1, Air Baltic has its first flight on the new route between Billund and Riga in Latvia.

Sterling introduces its new direct service to sunny Italian island Sardinia on May 13. From May 17 Iceland Express reopens its service between Keflavik and Billund. This year with 3-4 weekly departures against two weekly departures in 2007. On June 17 Ryanair opens its new service between Birmingham and Billund and on September 24 its new service between Edinburgh and Billund.

With these new routes Billund has a total of 34 scheduled international services.

Charter traffic went down in April for the first time in many months. The decline of 28.3 % is due to a number of factors.
This year it was Easter in March which meant that Easter was not the starting signal of the Summer season, which has often been the case. The postponement of the Summer season with some weeks has meant less charter flights compared to April 2007 where Easter and the Summer season start meant high charter figures in Billund. Apart from that a number of destinations which were last year served by charter flights are now being served by scheduled flights. The total number of flights to e.g. Prague and Rome has been larger in April this year than last year. But this year a number of the flights have been carried out as package holidays on scheduled flights. This has of course affected the statistics – positively for scheduled flights but negatively for charter.
Charter bureaus concurrently say that the demand for package holidays in the Summer season 2008 is on a very high level.

Domestic traffic has in April amounted to 12,012 passengers, which is 38.5 per cent more than last year.

The amount of handled air cargo has increased by 4.7 per cent to a total of 5,022 tonnes. Import has declined but export has increased significantly.
